Why, he's a New York liberal.
One is reminded of the famous words of an old Tammany Hall Democrat State Senator George Washington Plunkitt, "I seen my opportunities and I took 'em."
How did Donald Trump become a Republican? Did he ever become a conservative?
Donald is a New York liberal who saw a great opportunity to jump in and seize the Republican nomination for president. Need new positions? No problems, just do a 180 on prior positions. What we have is a celebrity marketing genius with a complicit media giving him free media and drowning everyone else out.
There is no trail from liberal to conservative over a period of self-reflection.
What we have is a light switch clicked once he realized he could run and "win" as a Republican in what looks like a Republican year against a weak Democrat. It would be easier to get the Republican nomination by trashing and insulting all his Republican opponents in a large field.
Give him credit for his foresightedness and the enormous ego driving him along.
Because his positions change on a dime, who knows what he will do as president?
If the "Art of the Deal" means that the end game is Donald winning, we have to ask how will the Constitution come out? He sounds like Obama on steroids but pro-American: another impatient authoritarian who will solve all the problems himself and tell us what to do to make everything work regardless of what the Constitution says.
He's got a lot of convincing to do. And he may well be the Republican nominee.
For those who haven't followed Donald much, here is a video clip of various statements of the Donald.
